The Research Group in “Partial Differential Equations, Control and Numerics” of Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain, led by Enrique Zuazua, is seeking one researcher (Marie Curie) to occupy a position for 3 years for a PhD Thesis student.

This position is part the 15 positions available within the International Training Network (ITN) project, ConFlex, sponsored by the EU under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions in the H2020-MSCA-ITN Program.

The ConFlex consortium aims to train the next generation of researchers on the control of flexible structures and fluid-structure interactions, using and also contributing to the latest advances in control theory and energy-based modelling. We are located at 10 universities in the Israel (Tel Aviv University), UK (University of Warwick, Imperial College, University of Exeter), France (University de France-Comte, University de Bordeaux), Spain (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), Germany (Bergische University Wuppertal, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen Nurnberg) and The Netherlands (University of Twente). In addition, we have four partner universities in Canada, China, USA and France and 11 prestigious industry partners, mostly from Europe.

The applications to be considered concern a wide range of flexible structures in interaction with fluids: wind turbines, aircraft wings, precision machine tools, vessels linked by cables as encountered in marine salvage operations and microscopic electromechanical devices.

The research to be developed within the PhD Thesis at UAM will be adapted, among the topics of the network, to the interests of the student, in the broad area of Control of Partial Differential Equations (PDE) and their numerical approximation methods to contribute with new key theoretical methods and results, and to develop the corresponding computational software.

The chosen doctoral candidate will enroll the PhD Program of “Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM)”, and carry out mathematical and computational research in collaboration with the team of members of the ERC-Advanced Grant DyCon “Dynamic Control”.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants have to hold a masters degree in Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or closely related fields;

Applicants must have basic skills in Partial Differential Equations and Numerical Analysis

Applicants must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies etc.) in Spain for more than 12 months in the past three years.
