Position overview

Predoctoral student in training to join the Macroeconomics and International Economics Research Group of the Department of Economics and Business at UPF to carry out research tasks leading to a doctoral thesis, in accordance with art. 21 of Law 14/2011, on science, technology and innovation.

For the ERC research project ‘Adaptation to Climate Change in Developing Countries’ (2024-2029), grant agreement ID 101088060, ICREA Professor Paula Bustos seeks to hire a full-time predoctoral student, starting in October 2025. The PhD student will perform data analysis, statistical and census data analysis, and programming (full details in section below). 

The PhD student will work under the supervision of Prof. Bustos as well as on their own research, and fulfil the yearly requirements of their PhD programme. The position is conditional on passing the yearly PhD evaluation. 

The full-time contract will be for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 4 years.

This project studies the effects of climate change on labour and capital flows in developing countries using micro-data from Brazil.

Prof. Paula Bustos (PhD Harvard) is an ICREA Research Professor at UPF and Affiliated Professor of the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE). She is also a Research Fellow at the European Economic Association, Chair of the EEA Women in Economics Committee, CEPR Research Fellow and co-leader of Trade and Spatial Frictions Theme of the STEG-CEPR program. https://sites.google.com/view/paula-bustos-economist/homepage

Job description: Students are expected to work for the project and for their PhD thesis, its topic being closely related to the project. For PIPF3 contracts there are no teaching obligations, but they are allowed to do 60 hours per academic year, and 180 throughout the whole predoctoral contract (4 years).

The main tasks to carry out will consist of:

  1. Data analysis: Processing and organizing micro-datasets.
  2. Statistical analysis: Applying statistical methodologies to the data.
  3. Programming (code editing): Adapting existing scripts and code packages (in R, Python, Stata or others).

Reporting line: this position reports to the principal investigator of the project.

Requirements

This position is subject to the official admission requirements in the doctoral programmes according to RD 99/2011, and all the submission requirements of the PhD Programme in the Department of Economics and Business at UPF. 

Candidates can be already in the PhD programme (first year preferably) or requesting their admission. 

Experience

Experience with working with data for scientific research, particularly in empirical analysis of micro-data.
 

Qualifications

Master's in Economics or related fields.
 

Skills / knowledge 

  • IT: Advanced or proficiency level of Excel.
  • Scientific software: Working or advanced command of Stata, R and Python.
  • Languages: Advanced level in English, both spoken and written (CEFR: C1 or C2; IELTS: minimum 7.0; TOEFL minimum 101).
  • Economics: courses in econometrics and macroeconomics. International trade, economic geography and development economics specially valued.

Expected remuneration
For the first year of the contract, the gross annual salary is 18180,48 euros (full time)
