The Core Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year. Grantees can lecture and research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.
Career Stage: This Award is open to academics, at any level, except early career. Candidates must have completed a Ph.D., or other terminal degree.
Disciplines: Applications are sought in all appropriate disciplines, but applications in Communications, Film Studies or Journalism are preferred.
Specializations: Video Communication; Screenwriting and Digital Storytelling; Motion Graphics; Digital Film Production.
Grant Activity: Teaching / Research. The School of Communication and Media Studies (ESCS-IPL), known as the premier college in Communications in Portugal, seeks to cover the main strands of Communication taught in Bachelor and Master’s degrees. To this end, ESCS counts with the involvement of its nuclear Departments:
- Department of Audiovisual & Multimedia;
- Department of Journalism;
- Department of Advertising & Marketing;
- Department of Public Relations & Organizational Communication,
The select scholar will research and debate subjects such as Digital Film Production, Business Model Journalism and Digital Strategic Communications.
The Fulbright Scholar from 2020-2021 will be hosted by the Department of Audiovisual & Multimedia:
Program Contents: Digital Film Production (Analysis; Practice Toolkit; Digital Film Operations; Foundations of Story; Audiovisual Design).
Competencies: Learn how to solve problems though a combination of fields and practices. Develop audiovisual products and video productions.
Stipend: Maintenance allowance of €8,400 (corresponding to 3 monthly allowances of €2,800);
Travel: The Fulbright Commission offers a one-time payment travel allowance, intended as a contribution to international travel between the U.S.A. and Portugal:
- Travel allowance of €1,100, for scholar;
- Travel allowance of €1,100, for each dependent travelling with the scholar (round trip travel receipts are mandatory).
Dependents: The Fulbright Commission offers additional funding for dependents who stay with the scholar during the entire period of the grant:
- A monthly maintenance allowance of €250 per dependent;
- A monthly tuition allowance of €500 per child, when attending a private school (proof of enrollment is mandatory);
- A one-time payment allowance of €300 per dependent, to cover for Portuguese language and culture classes (proof of enrollment is mandatory).
Insurance: Accidents and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE).
Housing: The host institution will provide a monthly housing allowance of €750 and will provide assistance in finding housing.
Other: The host institution will provide computer facilities, internet access and e-mail, office space and secretarial assistance.
Grant Duration: Three months during AY2020/2021. Preferred starting months are October (first semester) or March (second semester), as agreed with the Portuguese host institution.
United States citizenship. Dual U.S.-Portuguese citizens are eligible to apply but will only be considered if they don’t have extensive experience in Portugal.
Candidates residing in Portugal at the time of the application, or any time thereafter, are not eligible for a Fulbright grant to Portugal.
Number of Grants: One Grant.
