Professor Francisco J. Maldonado Hódar, from the Department of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Granada, welcomes postdoctoral candidates interested in applying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships (MSCA-IF) in 2020 at this University. Brief description of the institution:
The University of Granada (UGR), founded in 1531, is one of the largest and most important universities in Spain. The UGR has been awarded with the "Human Resources Excellence in Research (HRS4R)", which reflects the UGR’s commitment to continuously improve its human resource policies in line with the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. The UGR is also a leading institution in research, located in the top 5/10 of Spanish universities by a variety of ranking criteria, such as national R&D projects, fellowships awarded, publications, or international funding.
UGR is one of the few Spanish Universities listed in the Shanghai Top 500 ranking (http://sl.ugr.es/0aw0). The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) places the UGR in 268th position in the world and as the 4th highest ranked University in Spain, reaffirming its position as an institution at the forefront of national and international research. From the perspective of specialist areas in the ARWU rankings, the UGR is outstanding in Documentation (ranked in the 36th in the world) or Food science technology (ranked 37th in the world), Mathematics and Computer Science (ranked among the top 76-100 in the world).
The UGR has 4 researchers at the top of the Highly Cited Researchers (HCR) list in the Computer Science area. With regard to broader subject fields, the UGR is ranked in 45th position in the universities worldwide in the discipline of Engineering. It is also well recognized for its web presence (http://sl.ugr.es/0a6i) taking 36th place in the top 200 Universities in Europe. Internationally, we bet decidedly by our participation in the calls of the Framework Programme of the European Union. For the duration of the last two Framework Programmes, the UGR has obtained a total of 66 projects, with total funding of 18.02 million euros, and for H2020, 80 projects with total funding around 20.6 million euros.
Brief description of the Centre/Research Group
Francisco J. Maldonado.Hódar is full Professor and researcher at the University of Granada. Our research group (https://carbon.ugr.es/datos_inicio/) present a large experience in the design, preparation, characterization of different types of carbon materials and their use of as adsorbents or catalysts for energetic, environmental or fine chemistry processes. Traditionally focused on the synthesis of activated carbons from different agricultural residues, our interest changed to the development of new carbon nanomaterials and nanocomposites for catalytic applications, more specifically using sol-gel processes. Our works published in high IF journals and patents in this field are pioneer, allowing to obtain a high number of citations. The use and combinations of advanced synthesis procedures (sol-gel, hydrothermal, etc) permit the optimization of the physicochemical properties of materials, fitting the porous texture and/or chemical surface characteristics for specific applications. We develop materials suitable to be used as filters for the removal and/or separation of products in gaseous or liquid phases, sensors, electrodes, capacitors, catalysts for the water and air protection or green chemistry processes. Today we have a great interest in nanomaterials, mainly composite nanomaterials based on combinations of carbon-carbon materials (graphene, CNTs, carbon xerogels), carbon - metal oxides (carbon – Al2O3, TiO2, SiO2, ZrO2, etc) and carbon-metal (C-Pt, Ru, Pd, Cu) and doping with heteroatoms (O, S, N, P, B) looking for synergism between phases in specific applications.
Francisco J. Maldonado-Hódar is the researcher responsible for the Project (RTI2018-099224-B-I00, 2019-2021) with title “Water decontamination using sustainable AOPs by nanostructured catalysts with fitted properties”. We will be pleased to integrate researchers from the MSCA-IF program, if interested, in our research team.
As denoted by the title, this project is focused on the development of nanostructured catalysts for the water treatment by different approach: heterogeneous Fenton reactions, photochemical and electrochemical processes, and their combinations. Candidates will be incorporated to the project section devoted to advanced photocatalytic processes. For that nanocomposites will be designed, following the strategy previously described of stablish synergism between different phases in order to i) fit the band-gap of semiconductors ii) avoid the electron-h+ recombination iii) increase the surface area and porosity. Fitting these variables, the performance of nanomaterials will be improved allowing the use of solar radiation, thus avoiding the energy consumption, catalysts deactivation or loss of efficiency and favoring the interaction (adsorption) of pollutant before be degraded. These materials will be used in different types of batch reactors, starting by slurries for the screening of the more active materials and the identification of the factors inducing this behavior. Selected materials will be deposited forming transparent films by dip-coating. The objective is to optimize the photoreactor for continuous treatment by developing photocatalytic membranes.
