Brief description of the Centre/Research Group:
FiloLab is an Excellence Unit in the field of Philosophy and Applied Ethics, under the general topic of ‘Public controversies’. Diverse research groups focus on issues as ethics of new technologies, political polarization, medical and bioethics, ethics of the end of life, post-truth, etc. Most researchers in the field of Philosophy and Ethics are members of it, and it also involves a number of researchers and collaborators from other departments and institutions.
The unit hosts a number of post-doc researchers as well as Ph D. candidates. Several ongoing workshops and talk series, as well as invited speakers made it an excellent environment to do research and learn with a focus on the public impact of Philosophical studies.
In particular the candidate would be integrated in the Project BIENN Behavioral Insight, Ethics and Norms for a New Social Contract, led by Researcher Pedro Francés-Gómez.
Project description:
The BIENN project is about the evolution of Corporate Social Responsibility in recent years. In particular, it is a project that aims to contribute to the understanding of recent evolution of social demands towards companies. The premise is that the traditional relation between society and corporations, usually captured by the notion of Social License to Operate (SLO) has evolved towards a more encompassing view of the role of business in a society under several stress conditions: the necessity to mitigate global warming according to international agreements; the development of digitalization; the ageing of population; immigration and integration challenges; etc. Under these conditions, we live at a time of transition: Transition towards a sustainable economy (including agriculture, fishery and forestry, food industry and logistics); transition toward new forms of work and labor relationships; social transitions evidence by the downfall of traditional political parties and traditional political divides; and the digitalization transition and the uptake of AI in most industries and activities. While these changes and transitions have their own paces and evolution, there is the common metaphor of a new social contract, referring to the need to re-think the basic consensus of society. However, this metaphor is used rhetorically with no clear understanding of its meaning and/or potential. The goal of the project is to explore the role of the philosophical tradition of the social contract in business ethics and economic ethics. The research focus would be on the history of this relationship, clarification of the tradition as a method for normative studies, and implication for current transitions.
