We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Technology and Policy to join the research team at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism in the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford.
The research project aims to contribute international and comparative research on how different technology companies approach issues around free speech and news/journalism, and how policymakers and regulators are approaching technology companies’ role in these two areas. The project will operate at the intersection between social science, media and technology research, and policy and law, and seeks to produce timely, relevant, and accessible high quality empirical research to advance our understanding of – and inform decision making around – issues in the area of technology and policy important for the future of journalism worldwide
The successful candidate will take responsibility for and conduct the empirical research necessary for the implementation and execution of this approach as well as working with colleagues on developing an appropriate approach to the project, academic publications and other project output based on the research done.
You should hold a completed PhD/DPhil (or evidence of imminent completion) or equivalent experience in a substantive area of political or other social science including journalism/media studies, social science, or law. Experience in working with relevant quantitative methods, analysis and familiarity with the existing literature and work and excellent written, editing, and verbal communication skills to demonstrate a potential to write and present at an international level are essential. Knowledge of the literature and debate around platform governance and familiarity with the existing literature and work in the field of comparative/international media research would be desirable.
This is a full-time appointment fixed-term for 2 years.
The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Friday 13 December 2019.
