Announcement of a scientific staff position at the Department of Geology and Paleontology, Natural History Museum Vienna

 

This full-time position (40 hours) comprises the scientific management/curatorship of the micropaleontological collection of the Geological-Paleontological Department, at the Natural History Museum Vienna.

 

Requirements

• doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant area of the geosciences (preferably paleontology, stratigraphy, paleoecology);

• several years of post-doc experience in micropaleontological research, preferably with focus on foraminifera and the Cenozoic and/or Mesozoic eras;

• scientific publications in international peer reviewed journals, in the relevant fields of the geosciences; and documentation of research activities (in relevant projects);

• knowledge of classical and modern methods in micropaleontology;

• curatorial experience concerning scientific geoscience collections;

• willingness to participate/support didactic projects and exhibitions;

• excellent knowledge of German language, very good knowledge of English, both in reading, writing, and speaking;

• ability to work in a team.

 

Experiences and skills relevant for the position

• successful acquisition and leadership of externally funded relevant research projects;

• experience in communication of scientific topics to the scientific community and to the public/media;

• good IT (computing) knowledge, including experience with databases.

 

 

Duties

 

Research

• planning and realization of research projects concerning micropaleontology and stratigraphy;

• raising external funding for such research projects;

• presentation of research at international congresses and workshops;

• publication of results in international scientific journals.

 

Curatorship

• curating the relevant collections of the Natural History Museum, including management, administration and updating of the collection;

• international curatorial cooperation;

• improvement of the database.

 

Education and Public Relations

• support of the educational role of the museum (exhibitions, popular science publications, presentations, guided tours; answering relevant requests of students and laypersons) in collaboration with the Department of Exhibition and Education of the NHM;

• cooperation with media and institutions of education (publications, presentations, interviews, advice and projects) in consultation with the Department of Communication and Media of the NHM.
