Brief Description of the Institution

Universidad de Burgos (UBU) is a medium-sized spanish university located in Burgos, Castilla y León (Spain). Founded in 1994 UBU is a young university; with over 7,000 students at 7 centres.

UBU has a remarkable background in EU-funded projects. Currently, UBU participates in 26 on-going projects (in 10 of them as coordinator- 6 MSCAs) in 7 different programmes (H2020, Erasmus+, INTERREG-SUDOE, LIFE, JUSTICE, Call Of The Research Programme of The Research Fund for Coal And Steel, Directorate-General for Competition Policy and Strategy)  with and overall funding of 5.3 M€.

UBU has been awarded the seal of Excellence in Human Resources excellence for Research that accredits the University of Burgos as an entity committed to quality in the management of human resources in research.

Research / Project Description

Demonstration of anaerobic membrane bioreactor technology for the removal of pathogens and emerging pollutants from wastewater from human and animal origin.

Anaerobic membrane bioreactor technology is considered to be an excellent alternative for the treatment of domestic of industrial waste water containing antibiotics due to the high degradation capacity of anaerobic microorganisms and total biomass retention. The membrane of AnMBRs prevents the escape of antibiotics and resistant microbes from the treatment system into the environment. On the one hand, MBR technology allows the reduction of microbial health risk to levels that comply with Directive 2006/7/EC concerning the management of bathing water quality. On the other hand, according to BAT reference document for waste water systems in the chemical sector (2016), MBRs are the key water treatment systems in pharmaceutical plants as Roche Diagnosis GmbH (Germany) and Sanof-Chimie (France).

A new jet loop Anaerobic Filter Membrane Bioreactor (AnFMBR) was patented by University of Burgos (PCT/ES2018/070461). The jet loop AnFMBR integrates an attached biomass anaerobic culture on a down-flow fixed bed and an ultrafiltration stage by submerged membranes to produce a high-quality effluent. The anaerobic reactor and the filtration tank are coupled in series, with recirculation by the gas-lift effect of the bubbling employed for the scouring of the membranes, avoiding the use or electromechanical pumps.

Valorization of the organic matter from the wastewater by biogas production, low sludge production, lack of pretreatment and low fouling rate support the environmental and economic benefits of the AnFMBR technology.

Who can apply?

At the deadline for the submission of proposals (9/9/2020), researchers:

* Should be in possession of a doctoral degree or 4 years of full-time equivalent experience;

* Should not have resided or carried out their main activities in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the abovementioned deadline.

Particular conditions for this position:

PhD in Environmental Biotechnology or Chemical Engineering related areas

Experience in research in wastewater treatment, biological processes or membrane biotechnology

Benefits

The MSCA budget includes funding for the researcher; the following amounts per month: living allowance (gross salary): 4,579 €; mobility allowance: 600 €, family allowance: 500 €. As institutional costs: research, training & networking costs and a contribution to the management & overhead costs of the hosting organization. Salary is not negotiable and based on H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie rates. Fellows will work at the UBU main campus (San Amaro). The campus offers full-equipped facilities and hosting arrangements.
